Firm Adds Jeffrey S. Reed

NEW YORK (March 2) – Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton announced today the addition of Jeffrey S. Reed to the firm’s New York City office. Mr. Reed joins the firm as Counsel and Chair of the State Tax Practice on the Domestic & International Tax Team in the firm’s Corporate, Finance & Real Estate Department.

Mr. Reed represents businesses and individuals in state tax controversies, and advises about the state and local tax consequences of complex transactions. He received widespread acclaim for arguing and winning the closely-watched IT USA, Inc. case before the New York Tax Appeals Tribunal. While based in New York, he has experience resolving state tax controversies in over thirty jurisdictions, and has an extensive network of state tax contacts throughout the country. Clients seek his advice on a wide variety of state tax issues, including nexus, combined reporting, apportionment, obtaining and qualifying for state tax incentives and exemptions, the state and local tax consequences of large purchases and dispositions, residency planning, unclaimed property audits and reporting, transfer taxes, and the sales taxation and characterization of online services and software products.

At the outset of his career, Mr. Reed served as a tax ligation counsel for the Massachusetts Department of Revenue, where he represented the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in state tax disputes before the Appellate Tax Board and helped resolve corporate excise, sales and use, and personal income tax controversies. Mr. Reed is on the State and Local Tax Executive Committees for both the American Bar Association and the New York City Bar Association.

Mr. Reed received his LL.M. in Taxation from New York University School of Law, his J.D. from Boston University School of Law, and a B.A., cum laude, from Kenyon College.
