DENVER (March 27) -- Kilpatrick Townsend announced today that seven attorneys from the firm’s Denver office were selected as 2018 Colorado Super Lawyers. Partners Darin Gibby and Thomas Franklin and attorney Daniel Sherwinter were recognized in the Intellectual Property category, while partners Matthew Holohan and David Sipiora were named in the Intellectual Property Litigation category. Partners Scott McMillan and Karam Saab were designated as Rising Stars in the Intellectual Property category.

The Super Lawyers distinction honors attorneys who attain a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement as some of the region’s pre-eminent lawyers. The selection process includes independent research, peer nominations and peer evaluations, all of which result in a comprehensive and diverse listing of the top five percent of attorneys in each state.

Thomas Franklin is a partner in the firm’s Electrical Engineering & Software team. He specializes in strong patent prosecution, brand advice, licensing, due diligence and strategic counseling for high tech and clean tech companies in the electronic, software and energy fields. Mr. Franklin uses creative IP procurement strategies with a laser focus on his client’s business goals, leveraging IP protection to help large companies maintain their dominance and assist startups as they vie to dominate. Mr. Franklin has been recognized by Super Lawyers annually since 2014.

Darin Gibby has over 20 years of experience and focuses his practice on intellectual property counseling, transactions and licensing matters as well as patent prosecution. He has extensive experience handling the intellectual property aspects of mergers and acquisitions. He counsels start-ups and small businesses on intellectual property challenges to help maximize their portfolios to make them attractive acquisition targets. In addition, he manages several large patent portfolios for Fortune 500 companies. He was instrumental in launching the Denver office in 1995, and since that time has spearheaded its growth and emergence as the largest patent firm in Denver. Mr. Gibby was recognized by Super Lawyers in 2006 - 2007, and annually since 2012.

Matthew Holohan has extensive experience representing technology companies through all stages of litigation, including pre-litigation analysis, trials and appeals. He has appeared at trial in U.S. district courts and the U.S. International Trade Commission, and has argued before the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Mr. Holohan’s technical expertise includes semiconductor processing, digital signal processing, digital video, wireless communications, and cellular technology. Mr. Holohan was previously recognized by Super Lawyers in 2014 – 2015.

Scott McMillan’s practice covers various aspects of patent law, including foreign and domestic patent prosecution, portfolio management, and strategic development; infringement and validity studies; and licensing and due diligence support. He has technical experience in various areas of electronics, computers, software and optics. Specific technologies include circuit design and VLSI layout, wireless communications, computer architecture, networking, software, online video streaming, optical devices and networks, and semiconductor design and manufacture. This is Mr. McMillan’s first Rising Star designation.

Karam Saab focuses his practice on patent prosecution and counseling in the electronics and software fields. He has extensive experience with integrated circuit design, storage devices, encryption, networking, communications, electronic money transfers and biometrics. He has experience working with flight, telecommunication and insurance systems. Mr. Saab handles prosecution matters in China, Japan, Australia, and the European Union. Mr. Saab has been recognized by Super Lawyers annually since 2017.

Danny Sherwinter is a registered patent attorney who focuses his practice on strategic intellectual property portfolio development with an emphasis on patent prosecution in the electronics, software, and mechanical arts. He counsels individuals and start-ups to the largest patent filers in the world in a wide range of strategic and technical disciplines including telecommunications and networking, signal processing and coding (including medical, encryption, and neural network applications), computer architecture and storage systems, analog and digital circuit design, biometrics, aerospace devices, and business methods and software. Mr. Sherwinter was previously recognized by Super Lawyers in 2013 and 2017.

David Sipiora focuses his practice on patent litigation, patent licensing and counseling, trademark and copyright, and trade secrets.
