RALEIGH (February 12) -- Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton announced today that attorneys Joe Dowdy and Phillip Harris will serve as featured speakers at the Festival of Legal Learning sponsored by the UNC School of Law. The Festival of Legal Learning will be held February 12 – 13, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Mr. Dowdy and Mr. Harris will speak at a session titled, “Update on Consumer Financial Services Law.” This session will address recent developments and trends in state and federal consumer protection laws governing the financial services industry. The session will provide a brief introduction to the primary sources of consumer financial services litigation and a discussion of recent developments in the law, including the NC Debt Collection Practices Act, Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act, Telephone Consumer Protection Act, and other similar statutes and regulations. Mr. Dowdy and Mr. Harris will also present various strategies and approaches to resolving these matters when they are presented in civil litigation or as regulatory enforcement actions. Mr. Dowdy and Mr. Harris handle complex commercial litigation with an emphasis on commercial and financial services litigation, class action defense, sophisticated debt collection, unfair trade practices cases, and appellate advocacy. Their experience includes litigating cases throughout the United States, trial work, and strategic management of problem litigation for business clients. Prior to joining the firm, they practiced together in the Raleigh office of a large east coast law firm.
