Insights: News Releases Kilpatrick Townsend's 2021 Diversity & Inclusion Award Winners

During Kilpatrick Townsend's 3rd Annual Diversity & Inclusion Summit: The Surge, Miles Alexander, Alejandro Lopez, and Kristina Travaillot were awarded the Diversity & Inclusion Legal Services Award, the Diversity & Inclusion Community Impact Award, and the Diversity & Inclusion Trailblazer Award, respectively. Kilpatrick Townsend’s Diversity & Inclusion Awards recognize individuals within the firm who have advanced diversity, equity and inclusion or addressed critical societal issues related to gender, race, LGBTQ+ rights, veteran-status, providing greater access for people with disabilities, or the intersectionality of any of these areas.

The Legal Service Award recognizes someone who has, through diligence and dedication, advanced justice and equality and/or diversity and inclusion in the legal field through their work at Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton. Miles Alexander has demonstrated his diligence and dedication to justice and equality through his legal representation of individuals, organizations and social causes that advance social justice, equality and inclusion in our communities, schools, corporate and/or legal fields. Indeed, Mile’s pro bono representation of three Ethiopian women seeking justice against a man who tortured them in their home country was recently highlighted in the documentary film, A Fire Within. When Miles Alexander, accepted the Ben F. Johnson Jr. Public Service Award from Georgia State College of Law, he said, “I would advise young and old lawyers to choose areas of public service that are close to their hearts and to be as diligent and dedicated to those activities as they are to the practice of law.” Miles has lived this advice. From advocating for integration of Emory’s graduate schools as a freshman to fighting for inclusivity at Atlanta’s social clubs and legal organizations to tracking and confronting hate groups with the Anti-defamation League, Miles has shown a career-long commitment to fighting discrimination.

The Community Impact Award recognizes someone whose service to their community has promoted diversity and inclusion or addressed critical societal issues related to gender, race, LGBTQA+ rights, veteran-status, providing greater access for people with disabilities, or the intersectionality of any of these areas. Alejandro Lopez has demonstrated his diligence and dedication to justice and equality through his conspicuous service to Georgia’s Latinx and LGBTQ+ communities. Among other things, Alex has served on the board of directors for Georgia Equality, helped community members navigate the Affordable Care Act with the Health Initiative, volunteered with the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials (GALEO) and assisted with GALEO’s Institute for Leadership, served as a member of the Atlanta Pride Community, and created a network of LGBTQ veterans within the Georgia chapter of American Veterans for Equal Rights. In addition, Alex was one of the founders of Latino LinQ, a non-profit that facilitates healthcare and legal support services for Latinx LGBTQ people and their families.

The Trailblazer Award recognizes an individual who has made an outstanding innovation in regard to initiatives, programs, policies or activities that contribute to advancing equity, diversity or inclusion within the firm or within the community. Kristina Travaillot has demonstrated her commitment and dedication to diversity by identifying unmet needs, pioneering innovative solutions to address those needs, and working diligently to enact substantial changes that positively impact and advance diversity, equity and inclusion within the firm or community.
