Richard Horwood focuses his practice on wealth preservation, asset protection, closely held business planning, estate planning, family office planning, income tax planning, not-for-profit entities and charitable giving, and art law. He represents a wide range of clients throughout the country including privately-held companies, corporations, family offices, and high-net worth individuals. Richard helps his clients navigate complex planning issues related to income and gift and estate taxation, as well as charitable giving and business succession.
In the area of art law, Richard advises collectors and their other advisors regarding authentication, provenance, collection management, tax matters, disposition, charitable arrangements, museum options, and family gifting. As collector’s counsel, his focus is on enhancing the value of a collection by positioning exhibitions and working with dealers, auction houses, family foundations, and museums.
Prior to joining the firm, Richard was of counsel in the Private Client, Trusts and Estates Group at HMB Legal Counsel, a well-established, corporate-focused law firm based in Chicago, Illinois where he focused his practice on business, financial, and tax planning matters.
Richard is listed in the 2025 and 18 years prior editions of The Best Lawyers in America® for Trusts and Estates Law. He was recognized as an Illinois “Super Lawyer” in 2023 and the 18 years immediately preceding for Estate Planning and Probate Law by Super Lawyers magazine. Richard was listed as one of the “Top 100 Attorneys’’ for multiple years by Worth Magazine. He is recipient of the Austin Fleming Distinguished Service Award in 2011 by the Chicago Estate Planning Council. Richard was recognized with the “IRS Outstanding Performance Award.”
