ATLANTA, GA, May 2 – A Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton team led by Scott Marrah will assist Larry D. Thompson, Counsel to Finch McCranie, LLP and former Deputy U.S. Attorney General, whom the U.S. government has appointed as the Independent Corporate Compliance Monitor and Auditor for Volkswagen AG (VW). Mr. Thompson’s appointment is part of VW’s criminal plea agreement stemming from the company’s scheme to sell diesel vehicles containing software designed to cheat on U.S. emissions tests.

To assist him in monitoring VW’s corporate compliance, Mr. Thompson has assembled a team of leading corporate fraud investigators, compliance counselors, and environmental law experts. He has selected Scott Marrah to be the Deputy Monitor for Anti-Fraud, Ethics, and Compliance. Mr. Marrah, a former Assistant U.S. Attorney, is Partner at Kilpatrick Townsend, where he serves as Co-Leader of the Government Enforcement & Investigations team and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee.

Mr. Marrah has extensive experience with cross-border and international investigations involving the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), business corruption and fraud. He has led investigations in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, South America and Africa. Mr. Marrah has helped multinationals institute or enhance compliance programs, including risk assessments, training of Boards, executives and employees throughout the world. He also has deep experience in the areas of white collar criminal defense, internal, criminal and SEC investigations, and complex commercial litigation. Mr. Marrah assists clients with government enforcement issues, including criminal environmental and antitrust issues, export enforcement, regulatory matters and securities fraud allegations.

Prior to joining Kilpatrick Townsend, Mr. Marrah served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York (SDNY), where he successfully investigated and prosecuted a wide array of federal offenses.

In a press release issued on Friday, April 21, the day VW was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Detroit, MI, the DOJ stated that Mr. Thompson will oversee VW’s compliance reforms and implementation of the terms of the plea agreement over the next three years.
