Leland Black is a registered patent attorney who focuses her practice on patent prosecution, post-grant proceedings, IP strategy, and IP portfolio management for corporations, leading universities, and research institutions in the life sciences, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology fields. She has experience with a wide range of technologies including biotechnology, medical devices, and pharmaceutical innovations, as well as other matters in chemistry and life sciences.
Dr. Black has provided intellectual property counsel to a variety of clients, ranging from start-up life sciences companies, to universities, to multinational biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. She routinely works with in-house counsel, scientific officers, inventors, and corporate businesspeople to identify and protect the intellectual property of each client.
Dr. Black has experience in post-grant proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, including experience with inter partes review proceedings on behalf of clients seeking to invalidate the patents of third parties, as well as on behalf of clients whose patents were the subject of such a validity attack by a third party.
Before launching her legal career, Dr. Black conducted research in the medical sciences, including molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, virology, and immunology. Past areas of research include studying mechanisms associated with Mycobacterium tuberculosis persistence; determining the mechanisms of action and efficacy of influenza virus inhibitors identified through high-throughput screening; and developing novel mouse models of inflammatory bowel disease. She received her Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, for which she characterized the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in lipid-based immune-suppressive pathways
Dr. Black was named a 2022 “Up & Coming Lawyer” by Law Week Colorado.
