Insights: News In Memoriam | Dudley Humphrey: 1933 – 2023
We are sad to share that our longtime friend and partner Dudley Humphrey passed away this weekend in Winston-Salem.
Dudley spent his entire legal career with the firm—over 60 years of service—joining the firm after graduating from the University of North Carolina Law School in 1961. Prior to that he attended Duke University and served in the United States Navy as a Destroyer Officer. He took his invaluable leadership skills from the military and transferred them into becoming a highly respected litigator in the construction and aviation industry. Dudley had a legendary work ethic that was featured in the firm’s history book – “Kilpatrick Townsend: The First 160 Years.”
There are too many accolades to list here but Dudley considered serving as North Carolina State Bar President one of the key highlights of his career. He was also proud of being selected the fourth recipient of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Evelyn M. Coman Award for Distinguished Service in the field of Construction Law; being honored with the prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine by North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory for his proven record of extraordinary service to the state; and making the Business North Carolina's "Legal Elite Hall of Fame" in the area of Construction Law.
A kind and caring person, Dudley was a mentor to many and provided wisdom and support to countless numbers of attorneys and professional staff through the decades. He gave back to the legal community and was a well-known lecturer and writer on professional responsibility as is evidenced by his service on the North Carolina Judicial Standards Commission, the North Carolina Disciplinary Hearing Commission, and the ABA Task Force on the Model Definition of the Practice of Law.
For more information about the amazing life of our friend and colleague, please take a moment to read Dudley’s obituary. We will miss him dearly.
Our deepest condolences and sympathy go out to his family, friends, and close colleagues in the Winston-Salem office.
