Insights: News Kilpatrick Adds Prominent Trademark & Copyright Team in Chicago
Partner Tom Holt Joins Firm with Counsel Jeremy Buxbaum
CHICAGO (February 9) – Kilpatrick announced today the addition of Thomas Holt, Partner, and Jeremy Buxbaum, Counsel, to the Firm’s internationally recognized Trademark, Copyright, & Advertising Team. They joined the Chicago office in January from Perkins Coie, where they practiced together for nearly 11 years, representing a wide range of clients in IP brand protection and enforcement matters and achieving numerous litigation successes.
“I am excited to join Kilpatrick, a Firm widely recognized for its preeminence and leadership in the trademark, copyright and advertising practice,” said Thomas Holt. “I have long admired Kilpatrick for its depth, sophistication, and consistent delivery of outstanding results for clients.”
Mr. Holt’s practice is notably versatile and includes trademark litigation, protection, and enforcement. He can pivot between litigation and non-litigation matters depending on the needs of his clients. Mr. Holt brings nearly three decades of experience in all phases of federal court litigation, including ex parte seizure, temporary restraining order, preliminary injunction, trial, and appeals. For the past nearly five years, he served as Firmwide Chair of the Trademark, Copyright, Internet and Advertising practice group at his previous firm.
Mr. Holt represents major companies in trademark, copyright, and false advertising cases in federal courts and before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. He also represents clients in inter partes proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB). Mr. Holt also counsels clients concerning IP protection and enforcement and in managing U.S. and international IP portfolios. He also has substantial experience drafting and negotiating IP agreements.
Mr. Holt is widely recognized across the industry, including Managing IP and World Trademark Review. He is a leader in the community and has served on the Board of Directors at 3Arts, a non-profit established to sustain women artists, artists of color, and artists with disabilities, and has served on numerous INTA committees, including the Trademark Enforcement Committee. Mr. Holt earned his J.D. from Loyola University Chicago School of Law and his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Missouri.
With nearly 20 years of experience, Mr. Buxbaum focuses his practice on intellectual property litigation and counseling relating to trademark, trade dress, copyright, false advertising, and right of publicity. He has substantial experience in all aspects of federal and state court litigation, proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, pre-suit enforcement actions, and trademark counseling and prosecution across numerous industries, including hospitality, food and beverage, software, luxury goods, and outdoor and sports apparel and equipment.
Mr. Buxbaum earned his J.D. from Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law, cum laude and a Ph.D., M.A., and B.A. in Philosophy, magna cum laude, from the University of Colorado.
Together, Mr. Holt and Mr. Buxbaum have achieved successful results for clients – both plaintiffs and defendants – at trial, through pre-trial motion practice, and through early out-of-court resolutions.
“The addition of this exceptional team not only bolsters our footprint in a strategic market but diversifies the practice offerings in Chicago by establishing a formidable Trademark, Copyright, & Advertising practice,” said Jen Arkowitz, Chair of Kilpatrick’s IP Department. “We welcome Tom and Jeremy to the Firm.”
