This session is the first installment of a four-part series exploring the evolution of sales tax positions from initial determination through audit to administrative and/or judicial appeals. Kilpatrick Partner David Hughes and Brent Beissel from Reed Smith will lead the kickoff discussion. They will cover proactive strategies to mitigate risks before they arise during the audit and appeal processes. The session will highlight best practices and tips for taking a sales tax position, self-auditing and documenting tax positions, managing pre-audit inquiries and audit notices, and utilizing proactive compliance tools.

In the second part of the series, Kilpatrick Partner Samantha Breslow and Matthew Hedstrom from Alston & Bird, explore how to conduct audits strategically while anticipating potential administrative and/or judicial appeals. Attendees will learn how to identify audit issues that may be rope for appeal, explore ways to set the groundwork for further appeals, manage tax team with future appeals in mind, and when to escalate matters to outside of the tax team.
