Insights: News Releases Kilpatrick Townsend’s Catherine Munson: Featured Speaker at Two California Conferences Addressing Tribal Water Law
WASHINGTON, DC (October 20) – Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton announced today that partner Catherine Munson will be a featured speaker at two upcoming conferences on Tribal Water law in California.
On October 21, Ms. Munson will serve as a speaker at the 72nd National Congress of American Indians Annual Convention & Marketplace in San Diego, California. She will join other industry leaders in a session titled, “Protecting Indian Water Rights Under Drought Conditions.” With unprecedented drought conditions in California and the Western United States, the right to use an access water has never been more critical. This session will look at the drought conditions a few examples of what tribes are doing now and what can be done going forward to protect and assert tribal water rights. Ms. Munson will address litigation efforts of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians in Southern California to protect tribal rights to groundwater under the Winters doctrine.
On October 23, Ms. Munson will serve as a speaker at CLE International’s 4th Annual Tribal Water Law Conference. Tribes, attorneys, government leaders, and natural resource specialist will gather to discuss, debate, and learn about the current and most critical water issues facing tribes today. Ms. Munson, counsel for the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, will join counsel for the United States and the defendant water districts to discuss the case “Agua Caliente v. Coachella Valley Water District, et al.”
Ms. Munson is co-leader of the Native American Affairs practice and the Managing Partner of the firm's Washington, D.C. office. She has more than fifteen years of litigation experience, representing tribal clients in complex cases before various federal courts and administrative agencies. Ms. Munson advises tribes and business entities on a variety of matters including enforcement of the trust responsibility, protection of natural resources, including water and water leasing and water banking.
