Insights: Publications Women Qua Women: Using Feminist Theory to Catalyze the Gender Immigration Debate
Georgetown Immigration Law Journal, Volume 32, Issue 2
The world faces an unprecedented refugee crisis. There are almost sixty- six million forcibly displaced people worldwide; about 34% of those dis-placed are refugees; less than 1% of those people have been resettled. Reporting requirements vary worldwide, making it difficult to identify precisely how many displaced persons are women. According to a 1995 report by the Brookings Institution, between 75-80% of refugees are women. More recent estimates are closer to 50%. Regardless, in recent years the United States has consistently accepted fewer female refugees than male refugees. And while the ceiling on total refugees admitted increased steadily during the Obama administration, that number has significantly decreased in the first year of the Trump administration.
