Overview

Michael Adelsheim is a registered patent attorney who focuses on intellectual property law matters including the preparation and prosecution of utility and design patent applications, strategic intellectual property planning, and patent portfolio management for both established and start-up clients.

Michael uses his strong education in science and technology to provide counseling throughout the patent application process and in the analysis of patent invalidity and infringement issues. He provides clients with assistance across a wide range of technology areas including software, artificial intelligence and machine learning, application servers, business intelligence, middleware, networking, blockchain, multidimensional databases, consumer electronics, sensor and signal processing, cloud computing, data storage, audio/video, and mechanical devices. Michael also supports clients in intellectual property and litigation matters in federal courts including preparing pre-litigation analyses, providing opinion letters, working with expert witnesses, and taking and defending technical depositions.

Prior to joining the firm, Michael was an intellectual property counsel in the San Francisco, California office of a full-service national law firm where he led and managed patent prosecution for clients ranging from startups to multinational companies. He also managed invention harvesting sessions, oversaw associates, and provided strategic guidance on patentability, competitive analysis, and licensing. Previously, Michael was an associate at an intellectual property law firm in Silicon Valley, California where he litigated patent and trade secret matters as a part of its trial teams and prosecuted patents across software, telecommunications, signal processing, and hardware technologies.

While attending University of California College of the Law, San Francisco (formerly University of California, Hastings College of the Law), Michael worked with the firm (formerly Townsend and Townsend and Crew LLP) as a summer associate in 2008 in its patent litigation and antitrust practices. He served as a law clerk in the United States Attorney’s Office. Michael also served as a research assistant for Professor Jeffrey Lefstin.
