Nick Carlton is a registered patent attorney who focuses his practice on patent prosecution and counseling in electronics and software.
Nick worked with Kilpatrick as a summer associate in 2024 in its Electronics and Software Patent Prosecution practice, and he worked as a patent agent and law clerk elsewhere before joining Kilpatrick. While attending law school, he was President of the school’s Intellectual Property Law Society, a student liaison with the Colorado Bar Association’s IP Section, and an active student member of the Colorado Intellectual Property American Inn of Court, all while obtaining a second bachelor’s degree. After law school, he remains a mentor to students seeking to practice in IP, a member-at-large of the CBA’s IP section, and an active member of the Colorado Intellectual Property American Inn of Court.
Nick is especially passionate about the pro bono initiatives he supports. Nick served as a student attorney over five intensive, week-long clinics with the Tribal Wills Project during law school, and he has excitedly remained involved after graduation as a supervising attorney. Nick also served as a student attorney in the Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic his second and third years of law school and received “Most Outstanding Student Attorney” after his fourth semester of service. Before law school, Nick worked as Paramedic in Durham, North Carolina and as a Paramedic/AEMT/EMT Instructor at Durham Technical Community College.
When not studying emerging technologies or enjoying Denver’s welcoming legal community, Nick spends most of his time rock climbing, skiing, practicing Mandarin, making electronic music, reading fantasy and sci-fi, enjoying tea, listening to breakbeat and metalcore, or watching films as a pre-screener for his hometown film festival.
