Charles W. Gray is a partner at Kilpatrick and the founder and leader of Kilpatrick Labs, the firm's dedicated artificial intelligence research and development program. Under his leadership, Kilpatrick Labs designs, builds, and operates AI-powered tools for the firm's attorneys, professional staff, and clients, running more than fifteen initiatives that span patent and trademark prosecution, litigation monitoring, billing automation, and client-facing legal applications. The program runs on the firm's own secure, on-premises infrastructure and an in-house platform that connects the firm's enterprise systems as AI-callable tools, keeping client and matter data inside the firm's environment while giving attorneys access to the best available technology. Charles designed the program around a human-in-the-loop principle at every gate, so that AI performs extraction, scoring, drafting, and audit work while attorneys retain decision authority.
Charles also leads the firm's development of custom, client-facing AI applications, including productized legal tools co-developed with clients that go beyond traditional document automation, work that places him at the intersection of legal counsel and legal technology. An engineer before he became a lawyer, he began his career as a software engineer and project manager and brings that technical background directly to the design of the firm's AI systems.
Charles maintains an active patent practice focused on counseling and the prosecution of U.S. and international patent applications, with significant experience in patent invalidity and infringement analysis, written opinions, and licensing. He counsels clients across a range of technology fields, with particular emphasis on computer networking, satellite, cellular, and other wireless communications, computer architecture, software systems, and financial transactions. He has an extensive Asia-area patent practice, is fluent in Mandarin Chinese, and is a guest lecturer at Fudan University, Hong Kong University, and Tsinghua University.
Charles has been recognized by IAM Patent 1000: The World's Leading Patent Practitioners and by IAM Strategy 300: The World's Leading IP Strategists, including as an IAM Strategy 300 Global Leader in 2025 and 2026. He has been named a Patent Leader by World IP Review and recognized by The Best Lawyers in America® for Patent Law. He earned his J.D. from the University of Denver College of Law and a B.S. in Computer Science from Brigham Young University.
