Sophie Staires is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and she focuses her practice on Native American affairs and litigation.
Prior to joining the firm, Sophie served as a judicial law clerk in the Alaska Supreme Court in Juneau, Alaska.
While attending Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University, Sophie served as a law clerk in the Indian Resources Section of the Environment and Natural Resources Division at the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. She was a legal intern in the Tribal Prosecutor’s Office in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community in Arizona where she drafted plea agreements, probation terms, motions, and deferred prosecution agreements, and appeared in tribal court on behalf of the Tribe. Sophie also worked for an Indigenous-owned policy and business consulting entity where she helped track proposed federal regulation changes with significant impacts in Indian Country. She served as a summer law clerk at the Native American Rights Fund in Anchorage, Alaska where she gained a more thorough understanding of the unique issues faced by Alaska Native peoples. She was Associate Editor of the Law Journal for Social Justice.
